Spacecraft Thermal Engineer

The Company

We are SpaceRyde; building Canada’s first rocket to launch small satellites! The Role

As a member of the avionics team, you will be responsible for the thermal design, analysis, testing, and validation of avionics components for SpaceRyde’s launch systems. You will perform thermal modeling while closely collaborating with the avionics, structures and propulsion team with their design efforts. You will be challenged daily and will need to adapt quickly to achieve tight project deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Handling the day-to-day operations of the office, kitchen, and lab.

  • Order, organize and distribute office supplies and maintain inventory.

  • Establish office procedures and policies, and ensure compliance.

  • Receive and distribute incoming mails and parcels to different teams.

  • Prepare financial files and invoices for bookkeeping purposes.

  • File physical and electronic copies of invoices and other documents.

  • Pick up and drop off parts from local suppliers.

  • Arrange accommodation, travel and equipment for off-site work.

  • Assist in developing and coordinating company events to boost team morale.

  • Provide support for various teams as necessary, to meet our goals.

  • Lead the thermal system modeling and analysis of the Ryder rocket and the Flying Spider rocket carrier at the component, subsystem, and system level.
  • Collaborate with the engineering teams to determine their thermal requirements and support the design of the new subsystem concerning thermal considerations.
  • Determine and resolve thermal issues in existing airborne subsystems and components.
  • Model, develop and implement heat rejection and storage subsystems.
  • Develop thermal acceptance test procedures on spacecraft components.
  • Support the structures team with mechanical design efforts, including CAD modeling, structural and thermal FEA, and integration.

Requirements

  • Graduate degree in aerospace, mechanical engineering or related field specializing in heat transfer modeling.
  • 2+ years industry experience conducting thermal analysis and passive thermal management.
  • Experience using SolidWorks (or comparable industry-standard CAD tool) focusing on model interrogation, simplification and thermal analysis.
  • Experience in formulating multiphysics models for heat transfer.
  • Demonstrable expertise working with commercial CFD packages (Ansys suite).
  • Ability to self-motivate, work independently, and proactively ask questions.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and execute tasks under pressure in an Agile development environment while working with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to work in-person. This position is not remote.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a top university.

  • 1+ year experience of general administrative work.

  • Valid G driver’s license.

  • Exceptional ability to problem-solve effectively while maintaining strong attention to details.

  • Strong Microsoft Word and Excel skills (or Google’s GSuite).

  • Excellent communicator; comfortable liaising with internal and external parties.

  • Ability to adapt to dynamic schedules, and a focus on efficiency without sacrificing quality.

BONUS SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Thermal analysis experience in either Aerospace, Aviation or Automotive industries.
  • PhD research in a thermal analysis field.
  • Systems engineering experience.
  • Previous experience in aerospace projects.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a top university.

  • 1+ year experience of general administrative work.

  • Valid G driver’s license.

  • Exceptional ability to problem-solve effectively while maintaining strong attention to details.

  • Strong Microsoft Word and Excel skills (or Google’s GSuite).
