Avionics Engineer - Engine Control Unit

The Role

As a member of the avionics team, you will play an essential role in the design, integration and testing of avionics subsystems of the engine control unit (ECU) for SpaceRyde’s hybrid rocket engine (Grolar). You will be challenged daily and will need to adapt quickly to achieve tight project deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Handling the day-to-day operations of the office, kitchen, and lab.

  • Order, organize and distribute office supplies and maintain inventory.

  • Establish office procedures and policies, and ensure compliance.

  • Receive and distribute incoming mails and parcels to different teams.

  • Prepare financial files and invoices for bookkeeping purposes.

  • File physical and electronic copies of invoices and other documents.

  • Pick up and drop off parts from local suppliers.

  • Arrange accommodation, travel and equipment for off-site work.

  • Assist in developing and coordinating company events to boost team morale.

  • Provide support for various teams as necessary, to meet our goals.

  • Design, develop and implement the avionics hardware for the ECU of SpaceRyde’s hybrid rocket engine (Grolar).
  • Develop, troubleshoot and integrate the avionics subsystems for the ECU.
  • Design and implement necessary PCBs for the development process.
  • Perform integration testing on various ECU subsystems.
  • Provide and execute test plans for checking subsystems in specific environmental conditions (e.g. a vacuum as well as harsh temperature levels).
  • Liaise with the propulsion team to facilitate ECU development and the structures team for the mounting of the subsystems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or aerospace engineering.
  • 2+ years industry experience in electrical/electronics design.
  • Knowledge of power systems design such as switch-mode power supplies, noise filtering, EMI, motor control, battery management, etc.
  • Knowledge of different input/output protocols for data communication (i.e. CAN, RS-232, RS-422, I2C, and TCP/IP).
  • Ability to self-motivate, work independently, and proactively ask questions.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and execute tasks under pressure in an Agile development environment while working with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to work in-person. This position is not remote.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a top university.

  • 1+ year experience of general administrative work.

  • Valid G driver’s license.

  • Exceptional ability to problem-solve effectively while maintaining strong attention to details.

  • Strong Microsoft Word and Excel skills (or Google’s GSuite).

  • Excellent communicator; comfortable liaising with internal and external parties.

  • Ability to adapt to dynamic schedules, and a focus on efficiency without sacrificing quality.

BONUS SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Electrical design experience in either aerospace, aviation or automotive industries.
  • Systems engineering experience for aerospace or aviation applications.
  • Knowledge of environmental effects (e.g. thermal, radiation, pressure, etc.) relevant to avionics design.
  • Knowledge of IPC WHMA-A-620D and IPC J-STD-001 standard.
  • Experience programming in Python or C++.
  • Experience using SolidWorks (or comparable industry-standard CAD tool).
  • Previous experience in aerospace projects.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a top university.

  • 1+ year experience of general administrative work.

  • Valid G driver’s license.
