Aerospace Engineer - Composite Structures

The Role

As a Composites Engineer, you will play a key role in leading the development of composite structures on SpaceRyde hardware. You will work closely with other engineers from various teams to provide support with composite design, manufacturing and testing. You will be challenged daily and will need to adapt quickly to achieve tight project deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Handling the day-to-day operations of the office, kitchen, and lab.

  • Order, organize and distribute office supplies and maintain inventory.

  • Establish office procedures and policies, and ensure compliance.

  • Receive and distribute incoming mails and parcels to different teams.

  • Prepare financial files and invoices for bookkeeping purposes.

  • File physical and electronic copies of invoices and other documents.

  • Pick up and drop off parts from local suppliers.

  • Arrange accommodation, travel and equipment for off-site work.

  • Assist in developing and coordinating company events to boost team morale.

  • Provide support for various teams as necessary, to meet our goals.

  • Support development and manufacturing of launch vehicle structural components (metallic and composite) from preliminary concepts to detailed design, integration, test, and qualification.
  • Optimization of composite structural designs and composite manufacturing methods.
  • Facilitate production of flight-qualified composite structures at an increasing production rate while reducing cost.
  • Assist with root cause analysis to resolve manufacturing defects.
  • Work with other subsystem specialists to integrate components into the launch vehicle structure.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in mechanical/aerospace/materials engineering.
  • 2+ years of composite structural design experience (internship and design team experience is applicable).
  • Working experience with FEA relating to composite structures.
  • Ability to self-motivate, work independently, and proactively ask questions.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and execute tasks under pressure in an Agile development environment while working with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to work in-person. This position is not remote.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a top university.

  • 1+ year experience of general administrative work.

  • Valid G driver’s license.

  • Exceptional ability to problem-solve effectively while maintaining strong attention to details.

  • Strong Microsoft Word and Excel skills (or Google’s GSuite).

  • Excellent communicator; comfortable liaising with internal and external parties.

  • Ability to adapt to dynamic schedules, and a focus on efficiency without sacrificing quality.

BONUS SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficiency with CAD (SolidWorks preferred).
  • Extensive proficiency with FEA software (both metallic and  composites, Ansys preferred).
  • Thorough knowledge of Classical Lamination Theory.
  • Understanding of composite failure criteria.
  • Programming knowledge in python or C++.
  • Experience with hands-on composites manufacturing, including out-of-autoclave applications.
  • Expertise transitioning products from prototype manufacturing through volume production.
  • Validation testing experience for composite structures.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a top university.

  • 1+ year experience of general administrative work.

  • Valid G driver’s license.
